Here's the plot for this vintage fiction A man who wishes to serve his country, but is bound by a tie he cannot in honor break - that's Derry. A girl who loves him, shares his humiliation and helps him to win - that's Jean. Their love is the story.
This was #8 on the top fiction list for 1919.
This story is a very old fairytale that has been around for years. It is primarily a love story about a tin soldier that has come to a boy as a birthday gift. Inside the box was one soldier which had only half a leg. He saw across a room a princess who also appeared to have one leg that was shorter than the other. The tin soldier fell in love. That night the toys came alive and he was told that he couldn't have the princess for his love. This is where his adventure begins. He finally makes his way back to the family home where he started and also to the princess that he loves. However they are both thrown into the fire and sadly die.
This story is a beautiful story and although it doesn't end well, there is a lovely message of love conquers all. The illustrations in this book accompany the book very well and give life to the story.
I think that this book is very much suited to children of all ages and also the format of the book is such that it can be read easily to children.
This one is one I never ran across when I was young, and I enjoyed discovering it and being able to enjoy it today.
